Skills for Rhetoric

Jump to Products

This Christian Language Arts Curriculum provides students with academically rigorous reading, writing, and critical analysis skills while facilitating spiritual growth.

“Rhetoric,” including basic grammar and writing composition, is the centuries-old heart of classical education. Mastering this time-honored skill will set your students apart with distinguished written and oral skills.

Skills for Rhetoric, through a creative array of written and oral assignments, teaches fundamentals of academic writing, public speaking, and research papers - communication skills essential for students’ success in high school, college and beyond. In classic parlance, this is a quintessential dialectic/logic level course that really does prepare students for later academic pursuits. These essential skills serve as the foundation for future academic achievements and personal development that enables students to become strong Christian apologists. Dr. Stobaugh bases these studies on the Christian worldview. Weaving biblical concepts, readings, and applications throughout the curriculum helps equip students to stand firm in their faith and become the light of Christ in a deteriorating culture.

Dr. James Stobaugh’s Skills for Rhetoric guides Junior High students through the three essential components of written and oral communication:

  • Creative Writing (including descriptive writing, poetry, short stories, and more)
  • Expository Writing (including research papers, analytical essays, problem-solution writing, firsthand accounts, and more)
  • Public Speaking (including persuasive speeches, informative speeches, debates, and more)

A creative array of daily exercises - warm-up activities that stimulate purposeful thinking to in-depth analytical projects - engages and keeps your students on track. This training builds crucial communication skills that serve as the foundation for success in high school, college, and beyond.

This course equips students to:

  • Build vocabulary by pursuing new words in speech and writing
  • Debate and communicate abstract concepts into eloquently-worded written and oral language
  • Improve technical skills such as grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Enhance personal writing and speaking styles
  • Master standard forms for source citation including works cited, bibliographies, footnotes, and others.
